So far we have presented you many cool concepts like cars, bikes, and others. Today it’s time for another car concept which was designed especially for superheroes. I’m not a superhero, but I would become one if somebody would gift me this super car concept. The vehicle has an aerodynamic shape as it has to be very fast in order to help superheroes catch the bag guys on time.

It was designed by Matus Prochaczka and I don’t understand why doesn’t have any names. Well, no problem with that, every superhero can name it however he wants. All cars of the future will be green, and this one will be the same - the engine will be a hybrid based on biodiesel and electricity. Another reason for the car to be green is that superheroes are role-models for kids and they will follow their example and buy green cars when they grow up.

I don’t know what you think, but the design doesn’t look feasible to me and it’s very likely that this concept car will remain only a concept and we will be only see it in cartoons. I would like to be proven wrong and to see this green vehicle on the roads of my country in the near future, but first the designer has to find a car manufacturer to build it.

Last year Osram unveiled an OLED system capable of yielding 46 lumens per watt. The company has chosen OLED lighting because OLEDs can be more efficient, brighter, and greener than conventional light bulbs.

This year, in collaboration with BASF, world’s leading chemical company, Osram has achieved two milestones in OLED lighting development as they managed to design an OLED which is able to achieve 60 lm/W. The second milestone is that this efficiency meets the International Energy Star SSL Standard for color requirements.

Even if there were other companies who achieved better efficiencies, the OLED lighting system from Osram is the first that retains its white color at various levels of intensity. As Osram managed such improvements in less than one year, we expect them to release an OLED system really soon as they are trying to achieve a 100 lm/W efficiency

The nanodevice uses the same laser technique that stops molecular vibrations, only that it uses its nanoscale optical force to control integrated circuits. This could have serious implications in the world of electronics as it could lead to fast and low-power optical chips, and as you probably noticed, it could replace transistors in electronic circuits.

Optical chips use light, not electrons, to transport data therefore it should be faster and more power-efficient than conventional integrated circuits. However, these chips also have integrated electrical elements called modulators which convert light into electrons and then back again. Due to their “actions”, the modulators make optical chips slower and less power-efficient.

According to Hong Tang, leader of the team from Yale University, they have developed a nanodevice which uses light and not electrons to encode data. The researchers built a simple optical chip, then they pickled a small part of the waveguide (a thin silicon road which allows the photon to travel on it) into a 500nm wide bar. The resulting silicon wave has two functions, to carry and modulate the optical signal.

In order to test it, the researchers sent a light-signal into the integrated circuit, then they exposed the nano-optical modulator to laser-light that caused vertical and horizontal oscillations. These oscillations are responsible for modulating the speed of the light which travels through the beam, which is a clear proof that there is optical force in an integrated circuit. The Yale researchers are the first to demonstrate and to apply it on a working device. Also, the team showed that arrays of hundreds of resonators can be created on a single optical chip.

“The light force can be put to real use,” said Tang.

The circuit that the Yale researchers discovered was welcomed by other scientists, and James Hone, a mechanical-engineering professor at the Columbia University, said that this “represents a technical breakthrough.”

“It opens up a new way to make opto-mechanical switches that can reroute one optical signal using another,” added Hone.

Also, according to Hone, these technology could lead to “very sensitive chemical sensors,” however, the Yale researchers didn’t demonstrate this yet. This is only the beginning and this type of nanodevice is years away. There is still needed to prove its mechanical properties, and these chips have to be compatible with conventional semiconductor processing. Well, it’s a great start and it would be great to have faster and more efficient optical chips.

In a future where gasoline-powered cars will no longer exist, we will need new ways to propel our cars therefore designer Hossein Ghahramani proposes electromagnetic propulsion, a system that resembles MagLev trains.

This concept car is called Cellogan and its design was inspired by a feline as its body is curved and it doesn’t have any sharp part. Although the car was developed under Peugeot’s supervision, I can’t see many similarities between Peugeot’s regular cars and this concept.

According to the designer, Peugeot will only have to deal with safety and environmental matters, so that this futuristic concept could be fast, but in the same time safe and eco-friendly. When the Cellogan will not be on a magnetic road, it will move thanks to its three 360-degree caterpillar rubber track wheels.

The designer seems pretty confident that his concept will enter on the market really soon, however, I think that we won’t have any magnetic cars or roads in the future as these would be too expensive, hard to build and to maintain.
